USS Midway

This video gives a nice overview about the Midway.

The USS Midway is located in downtown San Diego. It served as an aircraft carrier from 1945-1992. It served the entire Cold War period and then some. On June 7, 2004, it opened as a museum. It’s one of the most popular naval warship museums in the US. I like it more than the Intrepid in NYC.

So… I was getting sick by the time we got to San Diego. I don’t have mommy immunity (kid free) and Disneyland is the perfect germ bomb! I enjoyed seeing the Midway because I like this stuff but I was half out of it. Vic didn’t get sick. When we babysat our friends’ kids in August, he got really sick with a virus (not covid). My immune system surprised me and shook it off. Disneyland took me down…hard. Two weeks in bed when I got home (not covid)! We thought it was allergies until I got home and got super sick. It started out with a runny stuffed nose. My cousin has a beautiful tree in her yard that kills my allergies as well. If my immune system failed and just got sick with Vic in August, wonder if it would have saved me from Disney germs like it saved Vic?

My San Diego cousin has two daughters and none of them are into military history. Her husband is and his Dad was career Navy. It’s really fun visiting the Midway with him because I enjoy reading war history but I don’t know weaponry, helicopters, etc. I’m not into that stuff. I really like reading about the soldiers experiences and what led to the conflicts. My brain seems to fart anything related to weapons and stuff out. Time and time again, I try to read about them so I know what is it I’m reading about and it goes right through me. Her hubby was pointing out what helicopter is what. It’s great, it’s like I have my own personal tour guide.

Seeing a Huey was awesome. I just stood there soaking it all in. I’m in my Vietnam War phase and Huey’s keep appearing in the books so it was an honor to see one in person. It was my favorite thing on the carrier. Recently, I discovered we have a Vietnam vet in family, my Virginia cousins’ Dad. I always thought the Vietnam War was “The Forgotten War” because my Dad would tell us stories of how most Americans didn’t agree with the war and the soldiers were treated badly when they got home. The Vietnam Vet in Philly, he didn’t even believe in the war and he was drafted and fought. When I read about the Korean War, that’s when I found out that the “Forgotten War” is the Korean War! To me Korea wasn’t forgotten because that’s all I heard about…Korea (my Dad and my uncles were drafted for it). But what I’m finding is a lot of people really don’t know the Korean War happened. Heck, most people don’t know much about history in general.

Huey!
Can’t remember if this is the John McCain plane. Think this is it, my cousin’s hubby pointed it out. Forgive me if I’m wrong. He flew a A-4 Skyhawk. Linked a little interesting video about his plane.

My cousin’s husband is 6 foot 5 inches (195.58 cm), he’s a giant! He had to watch his head in the doorways below deck. I remember seeing where they slept, the control room, and the rest is a blur. With my Disney virus it was hard to breathe below deck, the rooms were stuffy. We browsed a little and left. I just needed to rest. USS Midway if definitely worth a look see if you’re into this kind of stuff.

My cat cousins, Maisy and Betsie.
