By Washington Square in the Curtis building is a 15 by 49 foot favrile glass mosaic. The light and colors were brought to you by the studios of Louis Comfort Tiffany. The mosaic is based on a painting by Maxfield Parish.

Lyndhurst Mansion
The Jay Gould Estate, also known as Lyndhurst, was designed by Alexander Jackson Davis in 1838. The estate is located in Tarrytown, NY which is one of our favorite destinations for day trips. It’s about a 35 to 44 minute Metro-North train ride from Grand Central depending if you take the express or local train. Cold Spring, NY
Cold Spring is a town in Putnum County, NY . It’s a great getaway when you need a break from the humdrum of the city. The historic area is listed in the National Register of Historic Places and has many preserved buildings from the 19th century. Metro-North Railroad commuter service is about an hour and 10 minutes from Grand Central. Continue reading
West Point Foundry Preserve
West Point Foundry was an ironworks operation in Cold Spring, New York, located north of Manhattan along the right side of the Hudson River. It opened in 1817 and closed in 1911. Continue reading
Muir Woods
Muir Woods National Monument is my first and favorite forest. To this date, they are the tallest trees I’ve ever seen. I was ten the first time I walked amongst these tree friends. Every hike gets compared to Muir Woods’ redwood trees. Continue reading
San Francisco
San Francisco was founded on June 29, 1776 by Spanish colonists. It is named for the Italian saint St. Francis of Assisi. The city grew rapidly during the California Gold Rush Days of 1849. It’s a great but hilly walking city. Continue reading
Point Lobos
Point Lobos State Natural Reserve and Point Lobos State Marine Conservation Area is referred to as Point Lobos. It is south of Carmel by the Sea. The park contains hiking trails and many small beaches. Continue reading
Monterey Bay Aquarium
Monterey Bay Aquarium was founded in 1984, is non-profit and open to the public. It’s located on Cannery Row in Monterey and the site was a former sardine cannery. The aquarium utilizes the ocean by using pipes to pump in and circulate fresh ocean water. There are over 600 species of animals and plants on display. They don’t house any animals except sea otters which are rescued through it’s Sea Otter Program. Continue reading

China Beach
China Beach is a short little hike of first-growth forest Sitka spruce, Douglas fir and western red cedar. After Mystic we had some time remaining so we opted to check out China as well.
