The Audubon Swamp was once a freshwater reservoir used for rice cultivation. Now it’s a black water cypress and tupedo swamp. It’s 60 acres covered by boardwalks and trails filled with local wildlife. If it’s a lucky day you can see egrets, herons, bald eagles, alligators, otters, and turtles. While walking around keep in mind these were all rice fields worked on by slaves. Continue reading
Shufuso is a traditional 17th century Japanese house and garden. This villa was featured at MoMA (Museum of Modern Art) in New York City in 1956. 2 years later it was reconstructed in West Fairmount Park, Philadelphia. It was built in 1953 as a gift from Japan to America, a post war friendship between the two countries. It uses traditional Japanese materials and techniques. Continue reading
The garden Gods of BBG were kind to us this past Wednesday. We saw 8 bunnies!!! We’ve really been craving to see some green and get out of the concrete jungle but that won’t happen till July 4th weekend. Last year we joined BBG for the summer perk of members only after hours. It’s the best time to see the garden. At times you have it all to yourself. Even though we hear the whoosh of cars, being buried deep in the green of the native flora and fauna garden takes it all away. So you feel a little like you’re walking the woods but this time its way easier to get home and there are plenty of toilets.

Rodin is one of my favorite sculptors. I was pretty excited to visit his villa but too bad it was being renovated. Since we didn’t have access to the building we viewed his work in the garden and some other temporary areas – that just didn’t quite have the effect I was looking for. Either way he’s the man. I wish more present day artists created classics instead of abstract. Continue reading
